Rain halts Devil's
Bowl
WEST HAVEN, VT - A line of strong thunderstorms that stretched across most of Vermont Sunday night forced the postponement of all racing activities at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
The rainout could have been a blessing in disguise, however, as it now sets up what will be the biggest night of racing of the season at the Champlain Valley Racing Association track.
On Sunday, Sept. 5, Devil’s Bowl will stage the CVRA.com 100 for 358 modifieds. That event had originally been scheduled for July 18, but was rained out.
All the top drivers on the CVRA, and a handful of select outsiders, will be vying for the top prize in the CVRA.com 100, but the driver who is really looking forward to 100 laps on the incredibly fast surface at the Bowl is Don Scarborough.
Scarborough, the Brandon Bandit, is locked in a tight battle for the 358 modified point championship at the Bowl with Ray Hoard, but Scarborough has yet to win a feature in 2004. But he’s the defending champion in the fall 100 lap race, and there’s something about 100 laps at the Bowl that always brings out his best.
Last season, Scarborough recorded three wins at the Bowl, running his career total to 28.
Six different 358 modified drivers have won features at the Bowl this season, with Hoard and Ken Tremont Jr. leading the list with three wins each. Gene Munger has been to victory lane twice in the Mike Richards-owned small block, and Tim Laduc, Jim Ryan and Mike Perrotte have also won features.
In addition to the 100-lapper for 358 modifieds, all the other divisions will be in action, and the Amsoil pro-street stocks will be running their 30-lap Border War that was rained out last week. With double points being offered in all divisions, many of the track championships could be decided Sunday night.
Because of the long night of racing, starting time has been moved to 6 p.m. Pit gates will open at 3:30, and the grandstand will open at 4:30. Adult admission will be $15.
In the event of rain, the entire program will be run on Monday, Sept. 6, also starting at 6 p.m.
Further information about racing activities at the Bowl can be obtained by calling the main CVRA office at (802) 265-8616.
